Steelmaking

We carry out troubleshooting jobs as well as technical assistance in the short, half and long range on electric steelmaking, oxygen steelmaking, ladle metallurgy, billet, bloom and round casting and slab casting.

Electric arc furnaces

Our consultants have a broad experience in the operation of electric arc furnaces, having acted in different environments, with varied charging mixes, furnace types and steel grades produced. We use a benchmarking tool with 150 EAFs, and programs for energy balance, slag mass balance, models for steel dephosphorization, chromium removal, etc.

We are prepared to evaluate the benefits of scrap preparation, the use of alternative materials, new practices and new technologies may mean in terms of productivity increase, and decreased operating cost.

Knowledge on small EAFs, both three-phase and mono-phase, for foundries, induction furnaces and submerged arc furnaces for production of ferroalloys and calcium carbide, is available. Oxygen steelmaking.

The company has background on hot metal desulphurization and oxygen converters operation. With regards to hot metal desulphurization, we manage both lance injection in transfer ladle and use of impellers (Kanbara reactor), for cost decreasing, including metal loss. In converter steelmaking we have worked in the evaluation of blast profiles, the elimination of slopping, slag chemistry evolution, and slag splashing techniques for longer refractory life.

Ladle metallurgy

Our scope includes both the practices for aluminum killed steel and silicon manganese killed steel, carbon, low alloyed and microalloyed steels, regarding metallurgy during tapping operations, ladle furnace metallurgy and trimming station.

We count with models for desulfurization and inclusion floatation. Among the experience developed we can mention deoxidation of slag and steel, chemical and thermal homogenization, practices for microinclusions floatation, calcium treatment, inert gas stirring control, etc.

With these tools we define the right slag chemistry and the correct practices for protection of magnesitic or dolomitic refractories, absorption of inclusions and desulfurization.

Billet, Bloom and rounds casting

We can help you in all aspects related to the caster performance, both for merchant and special products. The design and lining of the tundish, the choice of the optimum mold for a given set of operation parameters and steel grades, the mold oscillation, heat transfer and other process variables.

We have worked in the elimination of clogging for different steel grades, and quality issued as rhomboidity, bending, bulging, pin holes, slag patches, cold drops, bleeds, deep oscillation marks, longitudinal corner cracks, transverse cracks, off corner, halfway and center cracks, central segregation and porosity.

Slab casting

The available knowledge includes the design of tundish furniture, the operation in long sequences by using automatic SEN changer, width changer and fly-tundish practice; the use of calcium treatment for surface quality; the post mortem study of breakout shells to determine the cause; the failure analysis of molds with early wear or suffering special operating conditions.

The steel grades range from low carbon (including peritectics) and microalloyed steels for hot rolled coils, cold rolled strip, tin plate and galvanized.

We carry out troubleshooting of defects like transverse cracks, halfway cracks, argon bubbles, macroinclusions and the related defects in hot and cold rolled sheet.
